The Arabic Language
The Arabic language is one of the oldest language lives today, it’s spoken by more than 200 million people in the Arab World, and it is an official language in 22 countries. Arabic is the language of Islam, and more than 600 million people use it as a vital spiritual component of their daily lives. Arabic is also spoken by many of the three million people of Arab origin living in the United States and Canada.
Arabic is the name applied to the descendants of the Classical Arabic language used in Quran, the Islamic holy book. This includes both Modern Standard Arabic (literary Arabic) and the spoken dialects. The two types of Arabic (literary and spoken dialects) used side- by- side in the countries that speak Arabic language. Arabic is written with the Arabic alphabet, which is an abjad script, and is written from right-to-left.
The Classical Arabic (CA):
The classical Arabic is the language found in the Qur'an and used from the period of Pre-Islamic Arabia to that of the Abbasid Caliphate. It’s the root of modern literary Arabic and all local dialects. Now; few people only can speak and write in classical Arabic, though it’s very important to understand classical Arabic to be able to understand old Arabic scripts, history and religion. Modern authors nowadays almost never write in pure Classical Arabic, instead they use literary language with its own grammatical norms and vocabulary commonly known as Modern Standard Arabic.
The Modern Standard Arabic (The Literary Arabic) (MSA)
MSA is the standard and literary variety of Arabic used in writing and in most formal speech, and one of the official six languages of the United Nations. It’s used in most current, printed Arabic publications -including, most books, newspapers, magazines, official documents, and reading primers for small children - and spoken by some of the Arabic media across North Africa and the Middle East, and understood by most educated Arabic speakers. All educated native Arabs can communicate in Modern Standard Arabic, despite their local dialect.
The Egyptian Colloquial Arabic (The Egyptian Dialect, ECA):
Colloquial or dialectal Arabic refers to the many national or regional varieties which constitute the everyday spoken Language. The most-spoken variety would likely be Egyptian Arabic, Egyptian Arabic is spoken natively by more than 52 million Egyptians and as a second language by most of the remaining 24 million Egyptians, also Egyptian dialect is understood well in All Arabic countries for two main reasons, The popularity of Egyptian films and other media in the region since the early 20th century; and the great number of Egyptian teachers and professors who were instrumental in setting up the education systems of various countries in the Arabian Peninsula and who also taught there and in other countries such as Algeria and Libya. Also many Lebanese artists choose to sing in Egyptian as well as Lebanese.
